Right Whale

A monumental, sweeping symphonic landscape scored for the BBC Natural World episode Riddle of the Right Whale. Adopting a modern, highly cinematic Hollywood aesthetic, the composition is designed to humanize the marine wilderness, fostering a profound emotional connection between the viewer and these majestic marine giants.

The Sound of Water

The acoustic environment of the open ocean is emulated through a massive symphonic framework layered with contemporary ambient depth. To evoke the true physical sensation of being submerged hundreds of feet below the surface, classic orchestral movements are systematically underlaid with soft, organic low-mid pads and an angelic, reverberant women’s choir. The arrangement relies on fluid dynamic swells rather than static loops, matching the slow, undulating rhythms of deep ocean currents.

Orchestral Drive & Performance Nuance

To capture the awe and physical power of the right whale, every symphonic element was performed in live via MIDI to preserve organic, human imperfections in timing and velocity. The mid-range string textures are driving and dense, utilizing intricate viola arpeggios, precise staccatos, and rolling woodwind flourishes to maintain continuous forward momentum underneath the vast, open harmonies. The entire orchestration breathes as a single entity, building toward a rich, soaring symphonic climax during the underwater breach sequences.

Technical Architecture & Processing

  • Deep Legato Strings: The primary melodic themes rely on expressive legato string programming, prioritizing long, romantic bow strokes to directly mirror the sweeping, graceful movements of the whales.
  • Hydroacoustic Low-End: Tubas and bass trombones provide an immense, resonant low-register foundation, creating a heavy physical pressure wave that simulates the crushing weight of the open sea.
  • Voiceover Spatial Pocketing: The score was meticulously mixed and structured to leave clean frequency pockets in the low-mids, ensuring that a documentary narration can sit perfectly over the music without sacrificing the sonic power of the orchestra.
  • Convolution Spatial Glue: An advanced convolution reverb matrix was applied to individual instrument groups and the master stereo output, successfully fusing the separate sampled sections into a singular, vast, and cohesive acoustic hall.
