The iMom

A chilling electronic and orchestral re-score created for Ariel Martin’s satirical sci-fi short film. The composition explores the dark psychological and ethical boundaries of automated childcare and artificial consciousness. The musical narrative deliberately tracks the disintegration of a sterile, commercial household into a suffocating domestic nightmare.

The Sound of Artificial Care

The score establishes a powerful stylistic discrepancy by juxtaposing an overly polished, corporate infomercial aesthetic against the film’s underlying bleakness. This simplistic, cliché “innocent” music—characterized by sharp pop pianos, synth drums, and uplifting chord progressions—intentionally contrasts with the darker narrative turns to breed a profound sense of psychological unease.

Hybridity & Mechanical Leitmotifs

Inspired by contemporary sci-fi minimalism, the score addresses the thematic tension between the organic and the mechanical. The android herself is anchored by a persistent, arpeggiated synthesizer pulse—a mathematical leitmotif representing unyielding, unfeeling programming. To balance this artificiality, live-recorded electric guitars, distorted bass elements, and a heavily modified, pitch-shifted Otamatone were woven into the cues, exposing the deeply uncanny, faux-human facade of the AI.

Technical Architecture & Processing

  • Semi-Diegetic Soundscapes: The score bridges the gap between the screen and the audience by treating commercial themes as diegetic television audio that subtly morphs into a sweeping, non-diegetic psychological underscore.
  • Atonal & Granular Drones: During critical narrative turning points—such as the blackout and the tension-fueled suspense sequences—the orchestra dissolves into low, atonal pads to evoke an encompassing atmosphere of dread.
  • Narrative Over Tracking: Elements enter at calculated moments to ensure that the sudden absence of human emotion lands with maximum impact, favoring storytelling pacing over rapid cue-tracking.
  • Sonic Shift into Horror: Traditional melodic content is gradually stripped away as the film reaches its climax, allowing raw, confrontational sound design and cluster textures to command the foreground.
